Job Search Workshops

MEC presents a series of workshops that focus on various job searching strategies. Note that some of these workshops require that you identify a job goal prior to participating.

Self-Assessment & Career Exploration.

This workshop is designed to help you identify occupational interests, make choices, and set goals based on assessment of your personality and skills. This workshop will help you set your job goal.

Making Age an Asset in Your Job Search

Learn the facts and myths about age discrimination so you can make age an asset, not an obstacle, in your job search. Find out about California agencies, resource groups and web sites with resources for older job seekers. Identify and practice pro-active responses that emphasize your work experience and strengths during interviews and networking events. Leave with information about MEC resources for older job seekers and an action plan that incorporates this information into your job search.

Networking into the Hidden Labor Market.

Prerequisite: You must have a job goal to attend this workshop. Learn how to identify “your” labor market and create an individual job search utilizing both traditional as well as non-traditional methods. Discover the importance of networking and how to structure a job search strategy. Become familiar with current and future projections of employment.

High-impact Master Applications & References.

Prerequisite: You must have a job goal to attend this workshop. Understanding the application process is paramount for the job seeker. Learn why employers use applications and what they want to know; prepare for and avoid knock-out factors; make points and get interviews. References are a critical, necessary step in the hiring process--learn to contact and coach your references.

Interviewing Techniques.

Prerequisite: You must have a job goal to attend this workshop. Learn how employers think in order to ace the interview and answer difficult questions. Discover how to sell yourself as a valuable asset to the prospective employer. You will get actual videotaped practice interviewing and receive positive feedback as part of this course.

Resumes: It Helps to Think Like an Employer

Prerequisite: You must have a job goal to attend this workshop. Learn what resumes and cover letters can and can’t do for you. Find tools to help package your skills and achievements. Create, save and email your word-processed resume and cover letter.

Internet: It’s Information, Not Just Job Banks!

Prerequisite: You must have a job goal to attend this workshop. Find Internet resources that help you prepare to look for work. Discover some of the best-kept job search secrets on the web. Use the Internet to research companies that are NOT hiring! Let the Internet work for you--learn about job scouts and search agents. Learn how to effectively use your free email account.
